Weapon Tips: Long Sword

Post  Jayccarl01 on Fri Jun 18, 2010 10:45 am

I've heard from a few people that they want this to be their weapon of choice, so I thought I'd post about this weapon first.

Easily one of the most attractive weapons in the game (if you can say that about weapons!), the Long Sword (or LS) is one of two weapon classes not available to beginner hunters. The LS becomes available to hunters in the village once they reach the 2-star quests, and the same goes for in the city (because players need to hunt a Gobul for their first sword).

Though the LS cannot block, it uses its long, razor-sharp blade to rapidly cut through monsters. The LS is the second fastest weapon in the game, although it is still much slower than the extremely fast Sword and Shield (and we are excluding the bowguns). The LS is usually sharp enough to slice through creatures until it gets duller, with the exception of using some of the lower-level blades against hard-skinned monsters like the Uraagan and the Diablos.

It is absolutely essential that you keep your LS sharp as you fight, because it's power comes from being able to do combos. As you attack with the normal attack button, you will see a bar underneath your stamina bar fill up with red. This is the sword's "Spirit Bar," and you want to get it filled as soon as possible. Once it is filled all the way, you can begin tapping the "dash" button to link special moves together. At the end of each combo, hit the main attack button to leap forward with a special slash that is extremely powerful. If you connect with the final slash, the border around your spirit bar changes color, and your blade also changes to the same color. Each color change represents an attack boost, and you can power up your sword up to four times.

The colors are: nothing, white, yellow, and then red. Even after you power up your blade all the way, you will want to continue connecting with the final slash; if you neglect to do so for a while, the power will eventually drain from the sword. But, as long as you at least hit the monster, you will not lose the ability to use the "dash" button to make combos.

At any time, you can push the main attack button within a combo to add an extra attack. Here are the two extremes available (I use the "freestyle" set up, so my dash button is "Z" and my main attack button is "A").

Shortest Combo: Z+Z+Z+A
Longest Combo: (A any number of times) + Z+A+Z+A+Z+A

Short combos are useful for when a creature is moving quickly; long combos are nice when a creature is fatigued or trapped. Using the LS correctly simply takes practice, but I hope this short guide helps!

Yeah, but then you won't ever power up your sword--once you fill up the bar, start spamming "z" with an "a" at the end to do a super strike, which gives you an attack boost if you hit something with the final blow (you'll know the final blow when you see it...you sheathe your weapon after performing it). You can power up to a maximum of 4 times! Then every hit you make will be stronger than before.

It only goes away if you don't keep hitting a monster with the final blow, so you should be able to keep it on red for as long as you can connect with a monster. And it doesn't go away if you miss--it's on a timer, so matter what color of power your sword is, you have to keep connecting with the final blow withing a certain amount of time to keep the power.
