Bible Verse Game

Post  Jayccarl01 on Fri Feb 05, 2010 4:12 pm

Hey everyone, I was thinking of a way to get ourselves involved with finding verses throughout the Bible that compliment each other, and I thought of neat activity. Once a week, someone will volunteer to post lyrics from a Christian- or Biblically-themed song, and then everyone can look up verses that support the theme(s) of the song and post their finds below. I'll kick us off this week with a song by Thrice.

If you want to listen to the song as you read the lyrics, then click this link and open it in a new tab or window:

Thrice
"Beggars" from Beggars

All you great men of power, you who boast of your feats -
Politicians and entrepreneurs.
Can you safeguard your breath in the night while you sleep?
Keep your heart beating steady and sure?
As you lie in your bed, does the thought haunt your head
That you’re really, rather small?
If there’s one thing I know in this life: we are beggars all.

All you champions of science and rulers of men,
Can you summon the sun from its sleep?
Does the earth seek your counsel on how fast to spin?
Can you shut up the gates of the deep?
Don’t you know that all things hang, as if by a string,
O’er the darkness - poised to fall?
If there’s one thing I know in this life: we are beggars all.

All you big shots that swagger and stride with conceit,
Did you devise how your frame would be formed?
If you’d be raised in a palace, or live out on the streets,
Or choose the place or the hour you’d be born?
Tell me what can you claim? Not a thing - not your name!
Tell me if you can recall just one thing,
That’s not a gift in this life?

Can you hear what’s been said?
Can you see now that everything’s grace after all?
If there’s one thing I know in this life: we are beggars all.

Awesome idea!

Jesus talking about a banquet at a Pharisee's House

Mark 14:10 " But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, "friend, move up to a better place." Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

"Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created."

James 1:16-18

I think it's talking about how everything that you own, be it materials or knowledge, came from God, and nothing we have was created by us, but rather given to us by God.

This song reminds me of Job 38 - 40. In these chapters God answers Job's question as to why he was put through so many horrible things. However, God does not exactly as Job wanted. He simply asks Job a few questions in return, such as: "where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?" (38:4). Job finally answers, "I am unworthy -- how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth." (40: 4).

I think the NT verse Coopler posted goes along with this idea perfectly, too. We really have no control over anything we have received and the good things we have are all a gift. There is no such thing as a "self made" man (or woman).

PS: The last words Martin Luther ever wrote before he died were: "Wir sind bettler. Hoc est verum" (English trans: "We are beggars: This is true.")

Sure! Post yours next Friday, and we'll continue this. Great job so far guys! The more verses we get, the more we see how themes continue throughout the Bible. It makes us think a little more of the importance of each verse, knowing that it is backed up by others. Thanks so far to dush, alpha, coopler, and Christina for finding verses!

Christina was telling me about her post, and she got me interested in these verses from Job (this is God speaking to Job):

Job 40:9-14 "Do you have an arm like God's, and can your voice thunder like His?

Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.

Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at every proud man and bring him low,

look at every proud man and humble him, crush the wicked where they stand.

Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave.

Then I Myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you."

Because I'm borrowing that from Christina, here is the verse I found (I don't want to be a bum!):

1 Peter 5:5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

A Breath in the Fog by Spoken

youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0m1IrdaPcU4

lyrics:

God give me strength to make it through
Situations that sometimes get out of hand

I'll keep my eyes on You
I'll keep my eyes on You

My dreams may not come true
I may, I may fall on my face
Still my hope is in You
All I need is the strength to make it through

God strengthen these hands that always hurt You
This mind that wanders and always gets out hand

I'll keep my eyes on You
I'll keep my eyes on You

My dreams may not come true
I may, I may fall on my face
Still my hope is in You
All I need is the strength to make it through

Like a breath in the fog my memories have disappeared
Like a breath in the fog my memories have disappeared
Like a breath in the fog my memories have disappeared
(I'll keep my eyes on You)
Like a breath in the fog my memories have disappeared
(I'll keep my eyes on You)

I'll keep my eyes on You
(Like a breath in the fog my memories have disappeared)
I'll keep my eyes on You
(Like a breath in the fog my memories have disappeared)

My dreams may not come true
I may, I may fall on my face
Still my hope is in You
All I need is the strength to make it through

My dreams may not come true
I may, I may fall on my face

I may fall, I may fall, I may fall, I may fall on my face

This reminds me of the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the book of Daniel. When summoned before the king, Nebuchadnezzar, about their refusal to bow before the great statue of the king, the trio are questioned as to why they have not followed the king's orders. Their response reminds me of this song's message of our hope in God, despite the fact that the outcome of our situations may not be exactly what we want them to be:

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and He will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if He does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."

Daniel 3:16-18

Btw, I wanted to add that Spoken is one of my favorite bands. I've been fortunate enough to see them a few times over the years, too!

Ok, we sorta dropped this topic but i'm gonna try to start it up again.

This song is "Take Me as I Am" by FM Static.
http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=US#/watch?v=EQ6vt4oEa-Q&client=mv-google

Here are the lyrics:

This time I finally see
The reason why, I can't do this alone,
It took some time and concentration,
To believe it, this I know

I need to build my faith sometimes,
But I am so comfortable in line,
I'm up, there's no more time,
To try to mess with this design

Tonight's complete,
Everyone's asleep,
And I wanna say these words to You,
I'll be Your hands, take me as I am,
I just wanna be with You

Take me as I am, 'cause I'm going,
I was too scared to start,
And now I'm too scared to let go.
Take me as I am, 'cause I'm growing,
But it's so hard to tell
When I'm not used to this so

Take me as I am, 'cause I'm going,
I was too scared to start,
And now I'm too scared to let go.
Take me as I am, 'cause I'm growing,
But it's so hard to tell
When I'm not used to this so...

I lift my voice to sing out,
Let the sound of my heart ring out,
These hands aren't holding me down,
Never again will I be without

I need to build my faith sometimes,
But I am so comfortable in line,
I'm up, there's no more time,
To try to mess with this design

Tonight's complete,
Everyone's asleep,
And I wanna say these words to You,
I'll be Your hands, take me as I am,
I just wanna be with You

Take me as I am, 'cause I'm going,
I was too scared to start,
And now I'm too scared to let go.
Take me as I am, 'cause I'm growing,
But it's so hard to tell
When I'm not used to this so

Take me as I am, 'cause I'm going,
I was too scared to start,
And now I'm too scared to let go.
Take me as I am, 'cause I'm growing,
But it's so hard to tell
When I'm not used to this so...

those lyrics are great!

reminds me of Psalms 139...

“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”- Psalm 139:23-24

ol' David sure had a way with a pen...
